Care for the external atmosphere in the Steklarna Hrastnik glassworks

In seven years, a 90 percent decrease in dust particle emissions

The Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning is preparing the Ordinance on the management of air quality in the area of the municipalities Trbovlje, Zagorje by Sava and Hrastnik. This is the first of seven ordinances required from Slovenia in order to manage the limit values of rough PM10 particles in the atmosphere, which appear as a consequence of soil erosion, re-suspension from traffic roads and emissions from industrial facilities. The ordinance will represent a systemic directive for decreasing emissions and will comprise over 40 measures classified into three segments: measures in the field of efficient energy use and renewable energy sources, measures in the field of traffic and transportation, and measures in other fields which also includes industry. The Ordinance is expected to pass by the end of this year, and Steklarna Hrastnik glassworks has been selected as one of the active contributors to its preparation on account of the experience and knowledge of our company.

Everyone must commit to decreasing air pollution  – from inhabitants themselves, whose personal combustion practices and vehicle use emit as many as fifty percent of all particles into the atmosphere of Zasavje, to industry of course with its emissions.

Steklarna Hrastnik glassworks understands it will not remain competitive without constantly modernizing its production and focusing on sustainable development. This is why we have been intensively investing in the modernization of our technology during the course of the past decade, while also taking into account the most rigorous environmental standards and regulations. Due to additional measures to be implemented on the basis of the aforementioned ordinance, Steklarna Hrastnik now plans additional investments in the amount of 50 thousand euro, primarily into the establishment of an environmental protection management system.

In 2005, the glass packaging production line received a brand new factory, constructed in accordance with valid European BREF documents stating guidelines and recommendations for the selection of optimal current technologies in the glassworks industry. The new glass packaging furnace was fitted with an electronic filter for waste gas treatment that captures between 95 and 99 percent of dust particles. New electronic filters introduce several advantages since they provide an outstanding rate of particle emission control, operate efficiently at high temperatures, are not susceptible to fluctuations in the amount of dust in waste gas, and carry low maintenance costs coupled with good energy efficiency. The production site for tableware glass is fitted with an advanced fabric filter, which manages to reduce emissions from the four glassworks furnaces to a mere quarter of the level prescribed by environmental and IPPC regulations.

To further reduce the emission of dust particles in glass production, the glassworks implemented the following additional measures: storage facilities, machinery and transport belts are sealed and fitted with appropriate filters, the glass batch is appropriately moistened, and all transport surfaces of the company are organized in a manner that prevents the rising of dust to the greatest possible extent.

Combined, these activities along with our constant monitoring of emissions resulted in a drastic 90 percent decrease in the glassworks' emission of dust particles into the atmosphere.

One of the largest investments in the past seven years of the Hrastnik company, which now boasts a venerable 152-year tradition, has been the construction of a new muffle furnace for tableware glass. The value of the investment is estimated at 7 million euro, and it is expected to be completed by February 2013. The furnace will be designed as an 'oxy-fuel' furnace, where the combustion of natural gas in the presence of extremely pure oxygen provides for better energy efficiency, improved glass quality and extended production capacity. The new furnace will further reduce atmospheric emissions, and pollutant values will be reduced by a factor of five, with extremely low content of nitrogen oxides and dust.
